RAW

eddie-murphy-rawHe may not have released a decent movie in a minute, and shamefully tried to shirk his fatherly duties when he knocked up a Spice Girl (that still seems so unreal of a situation to me, even a coupla years down the line), but for me Eddie Murphy will always be first and foremost one of the funniest to have ever done it. And when I say ‘done it’, I don’t mean impregnate a Spice Girl, I mean ‘funny-ass comedy’.

As a child of the 80s I remember the young Eddie Murphy in his prime, live and direct when he was mouthy, crude, freaky and side-splittingly hilarious! Back then he really didn’t a give a f- who he offended, but it was usually all in the name of making people cry with laughter. My Eddie memories cannot be contained in just one post, so I will dedicate this one to just one of many the reasons Eddie is a comedic genius! And that is a little stand-up show called Raw.

Raw is a film that is as funny today as it was back in 1987, from Eddie’s painfully tight purple leather suit – which was fruitier than a packet of Skittles – to the lethal jokes he delivered.

My favourite partsĀ  include the ‘Umfufu skit’! Yes I admit it my fellow Africans. Please don’t hate me, although I know most of you probably agree! This skit is sooo eeffin ignorant, as ‘ignant’ as they come, but sooo funny! I wanna slap him for even going there, but I’d probably miss from laughing my ass off!

Growing up as an African child in 80s Britain, there were a lot of jokes fired at our expense, especially in the school playground, and mostly from our fellow black British born Caribbean heritage brothers and sisters, and I say that with love- sorta. lol! But Eddie doing it was different somehow. I mean everybody got cussed the hell out in this stand up show, from gay peeps, women, men, Italians, blacks in general, everybody! So there isn’t much room to be precious! Plus the way I look at it, all blacks are Africans so Eddie’s clowning his damn self, as were those peeps back in school! lol!

This below skit about his mother making a ‘McDonalds burger’ is classic to me as it reminds me of my own mum, and the kind of thing she would do when I was younger! Hilarious!

And this last one (I could be here all day with the favourite parts, so gonna settle at three). This is one where Eddie talks about why he doesn’t want to get married. As we all know he did years later, to model Nicole Mitchell in 1993. But with a pre-nup in place. Good job as they ended up getting divorced 12 years later, which to be fair isĀ  still pretty decent by Hollywood standards!

Yeah, ‘Raw’ is classic from beginning to end. My favorite part that I just recently laughed my ass off HARD to was the part where he did the Black man’s defense mechanism, actin’ like he was tough, then he said the white dude replied “C’MOOOONNNN!”

    Alright, Rock-O! Great entry.

    -D!
