LISA LISA & CULT JAM – I WONDER IF I TAKE U HOME
One of my favourite songs of all time period is Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam’s I Wonder If I Take You Home. Whenever I hear it, it instantly takes me back to my childhood. I still remember hearing it for the first time in 1985 while on a school trip at the final day disco! And it still remains a tune which gets rinsed in the clubs till this day. And is a staple tune, during summer barbecues!
Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam were a group from New York, who had four albums back in the mid 80s to early 90s. They were created and produced by Full Force (yes, those bad guys from the House Party movies), who are well renowned in music circles for writing big hits for the likes of James Brown, Rihanna, NSYNC and Britney Spears, as well as scoring their own hits throughout the years such as Ain’t My Type of Hype, which also featured in the first House Party movie (during the dance-off scene).
But back to Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam, funnily enough I Wonder If I Take You Home, was destined to be just another filler track on a compilation album. But when said album ‘Breaking’ was delivered to the European division of label CBS, US DJs picked it up as an import, and started playing it in New York clubs. This caused the song to become a big hit stateside back in 1985, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play charts, number six on the r&b charts, and 34 on the pop chart. The single eventually went gold. It was also huge over in the UK hitting number 12 in the charts.
The gr0up’s debut album, Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam with Full Force (1985), went platinum based off of this and fellow hits singles All Cried Out and Can You Feel the Beat, while follow-up album Spanish Fly (1987) also went platinum.
After the group broke up in 1991, lead singer Lisa Velez had a couple of (not that successful) solo albums. She also delved into some acting work, most notably starring in the short-lived Nickelodeon teen sit-com, Taina, from 2001-2002.
More recently she was spotted on a red carpet and gossip site Media Takeout were quick to capture some shots of the former singing sensation… Check out what she looks like now on the below link!
