In recent months the offspring of two the most important names in old school popular culture, have been making waves of their own in the world of music and film. Daniel ‘Diggy’ Simmons, son of Rev. Joseph ‘Run’ Simmons of Run DMC fame, and Jaden and Willow (yup that’s her real name) Smith, son and daughter of superstar Will Smith, are currently building up careers and fanbases set to rival their famous parents.
Diggy Simmons, 15, first came to public consciousness via the MTV reality TV show Run’s House, which centres around daily goings-on of his famous father and the rest of his family. The show has been a big hit across the globe with numerous series, but funnily enough, it was Diggy’s siblings, e.g. older half-sisters Angela and Vanessa with their Pastry sneaker line and spin-off MTV show Daddy’s Girls, and older brother JoJo’s and his own ‘rap’ career, which were showcased mostly on the show, while while Diggy’s music wasn’t really focused on that much in earlier series.
So I guess no one REALLY knew he had skills until his song Flow Stoopid, (rapped over Nas’ Made You Look) dropped a few months ago, and turned the internet ‘Diggy crazy’, and gave him more attention than his brother and sisters ever recieved! Shortly after that he signed with Atlantic Records and is now one of the most anticipated young artists on the hip hop scene. His flow has been praised by everyone from Kanye West to Common!
Diggy, who with his Pharrell-like nerdy-cute swag, has got all the young girls (and the cougars) in a tizzy too, currently has the world in the palm of his hand!
Elsewhere Willow and Jaden, whose mother is actress Jada Smith (who most people still remember most from popular 90s TV sit-com A Different World) have also been following in the footsteps of their famous parents. Jaden has been doing his thing on the acting scene. Following on from his critically acclaimed turn starring opposite his dad in the Oscar nominated flick, The Pursuit of Happyness (2006), ultra-cute Jaden stepped out of the shadow of his famous father earlier this year, as the lead in a remake of the 80s classic The Karate Kid. The film went on to top box offices around the word and turned Jaden into a bonifide star in his own right. The 10-year-old cutie also featured on the Justin Bieber track Never Say Never, from the film’s official soundtrack, and like his friend Justin, has built up a legion of young female fans.
And now it looks like Jaden’s lil sister Willow, who is just nine, is set to steal some of her older brother’s thunder. Like Jaden she has had a few acting roles already, and even though she is so young Willow is already know as a bit of a fashionista on the showbiz scene. With her flamboyant sense of style and shaved-punk hair style, she has already been drawing praise on the red carpet, and groomed by the same stylist as Rihanna.
A few weeks back Willow’s mother Jada revealed that her daughter would be stepping into the studio to record some music of her own. At the time I remember saying to a few peeps that this girl had the potential to be bigger than Justin Bieber, even though I had yet to hear her sing a single note.
Lo and behold when her single dropped yesterday the whole ‘net went crazy. The song titled Whip My Hair is ultra funky, infectious and has more sass than a can of hairspray, and you forget totally that ‘THIS IS A NINE YEAR OLD!’ Admittedly it is a bit grown-up for her, with mentions of ‘swag’ and ‘haters’, , but a good song is a good song, and I’m sure once they shoot a video this is gonna be all over place. As a fan of Will and Jada, I knew anything a child of theirs put out was gonna be big. And now with talk of Jay-Z signing Willow to his label Roc Nation, even more credibility is being thrown at this project.
Many people commenting on entertainment blogs, previewing the track, have already been comparing Willow to 21-year-old pop princess Rihanna, probably because Rih’s brand new track Only Girl (In The World), the first single from her forth-coming album Loud, also premiered yesterday. Right now a lot of fans are already saying Willow’s singing voice sounds better. Although, I don’t see any point making those kinds of comparisons at this stage, I admit Willow’s voice does sound better that Rih Rih’s on this track. What do you think?
I personally love it, and have been playing it all day! In the same way I was playing Diggy’s track when I first heard it. It looks like all of these kids are set to be as big as their famous parents!
