DUNGEONS & DRAGONS

The opening titles of Dungeons & Dragons will still haunt any child of the Eighties.

As eerie fairground music tinkles in the background, a group of kids take a ride on a ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ rollercoaster. Suddenly, they’re whisked into a nightmarish dimension where they’re immediately charged by a fire breathing five headed dragon.

Luckily, they’re quickly assisted by the Dungeon Master – imagine a sort of squashed Ross Kemp with Jimmy Saville’s hair – who gives each of them a magical weapon and a new job title.

FIRST LOOK AT THUNDERCATS MOVIE

Yeah, I know this came out a couple of weeks ago, but for those who haven’t seen it… Here is the first look at the new Thundercats movie!

While no official date on when the long overdue Thundercats big screen movie will be out, this week the London Toy Fair released these pictures (via Warner Bros Animation) for the brand new Thundercats cartoon, scheduled to  air on the WB’s Cartoon Network (in the US) sometime this year. No word of when it will air in the UK as yet. Below is the press release for the new series, which will feature an anime-influenced style of animation courtesy of Japanese animators Studio4°C  (Whose credits include The Animatrix and Gotham Knights).

THUNDERCATS PRESS RELEASE

Series Coming Soon to Cartoon Network

Roaring to life through WBA and Studio4°C’s use of the Japanese animated artistry of anime, “ThunderCats” characters Lion-O, Mumm-Ra, Panthro, Cheetara and others will spring off the screen with realistic cat-like characteristics inconceivable in previous incarnations.

The new “ThunderCats” will appeal to viewers who have loved the characters all their lives as well as young newcomers to the franchise. A sweeping tale combining swords and science and boasting ferocious battles with the highest of stakes, the grand origin story of Prince Lion-O’s ascension to the throne – and of those who would thwart his destiny at any cost – takes on epic dimensions in this sharp new telling. As the forces of good and evil battle each other in the quest for the fabled Stones of Power, Lion-O and his champions learn valuable lessons of loyalty, honor and mortality in every episode.

“ThunderCats” is executive produced by Sam Register (“Teen Titans,” “Ben 10,” “Batman: The Brave and the Bold”). Michael Jelenic (“Batman: The Brave and the Bold,” “Wonder Woman”) and Ethan Spaulding (“Avatar: The Last Airbender”) are the producers.

Obviously I prefer the old look Thundercats, but am I pleased a new generation of fans will get a chance to enjoy one of my favourite old school animation series complete with all the updated designs and gadgets we weren’t afforded (not that that was a bad thing).

However, I notice there are no visuals of the mischievous Wileykit and Wileykat or Lion-o’s trusted companion Snarf here. I hope they haven’t got rid of them for the revamped version, as it wouldn’t be the same without ‘em!

The London Toy Fair also showcased all new Bandai action figures for the brand to press and fans.

YOGI BEAR & THE SMURFS GO 3D!

yogi-bearWhen I was growing up Yogi Bear was one of my favourite cartoons. My brothers and I used to love watching the antics of the lovable but trouble-prone bear and his sweet but long-suffering side-kick Boo Boo. Jellystone Park was where they resided and their main mission in life was to swipe as many ‘pic-a-nic baskets’ from the visiting public as possible, much to the dismay of the park’s caretaker, and Yogi’s nemisis, Ranger Smith.

CHILDREN’S TV SHOW THEMES

img690One of the best things about growing up in the 80s and 90s was how great the kids TV shows were. I know I keep harping on about the fact that today’s films, music, TV show, culture and everything else can’t touch that of yesterday, but the site is called I Miss The Old School and the fact that you are here signifies that you probably agree with me to some degree. For every great cartoon and kids TV show that I remember from back in the day, the theme tune and accompanying visuals, are two of the things that stick out most. A lot of them are so catchy I can still sing/hum along to them till this day. Below I have listed some of my faves, as always I couldn’t fit them all in this time, but stay tuned as plenty more will pop up in various posts in this site over the coming weeks, months and years. Long live the old school, as it never gets… erm… old! Lol! Continue reading “CHILDREN’S TV SHOW THEMES” »

THUNDERCATS

Thundercat logo

One of my favourite cartoons of the 80s, was based on a group of half human, half feline super heroes, known as the ThunderCats.

THE PLOT:

The ThunderCats were forced to flea their home planet of Thundera, when it was invaded, and on the verge of being blown to smithereens. They were  the only survivors of their homeland and lead by Lion-o, who was just a kid when they originally fled. But because it took them a couple of decades to get to their destination, he was a grown man by the time they arrived… but only in body. Continue reading “THUNDERCATS” »
