LABYRINTH

labyrinth2“Where everything seems possible and nothing is as it seems…”

Allow me to introduce you to an absolute 80s classic, containing ten times more originality, wit and breathtaking feats of the imagination than J. K. Rowling could ever hope to employ. It’s time for the lightning-shock-to-the-system that is… Labyrinth. Continue reading “LABYRINTH” »

JOHNNY DEPP

johnny depp

Johnny Depp was the quintessential 80s and early 90s heartthrob with his doe-eyes and good hair. These days, albeit married with a couple of kids and a bit of a recluse away from acting, he’s still a babe magnet. However, the doe-eyes are now mostly hidden behind those old-man type round-rimmed spectacles and the hair… Well let’s not talk about the hair… Instead Maria Soriano talks about her long-time, and at first reluctant, love affair with Mr Depp, which started unintentionally via her older sister… Continue reading “JOHNNY DEPP” »

CALIFORNIA DREAMS REUNION

cd2a

Pretty random I know, but who remembers the Saturday morning TV show California Dreams ? It ran from 1992-1996 and used to come on after Saved By The Bell back in the day. It was also executive-produced by SBTB guru Peter Engel. The show centred around a group of Californian all-American high-schoolers, who were also in a band called the Dreams.

Me and my youngest brother, who probably won’t thank me for saying this, used to LOVE this show! It was totally ‘Cheese on Toast’, but that’s the way I liked my TV shows back then. AND now if I’m honest! Continue reading “CALIFORNIA DREAMS REUNION” »

CAST OF ‘STAND BY ME’ REUNITE

article-0-0B39B33A00000578-833_634x404There were loads of classic coming of age films in the 80s, from Goonies, 16 Candles, The Breakfast Club, St Elmos Fire…… And of course Stand by Me (1986), which was up there with the best of them. Continue reading “CAST OF ‘STAND BY ME’ REUNITE” »

BOBBYS BROWN AND VALENTINO DUET ON ‘ROCK WITCHA’!

bobby-v-brown-lopezI was excited to see pint-sized r&b singer Bobby Valentino and old school fave Bobby Brown, singing  a duet of  Bobby B’s 80s hit Rock Witcha, on a recent airing of US chat show Lopez Tonight.

That song is a stone-cold classic and the guys did a good job on it! Judging from the interview with host George Lopez afterwards, I think  the song (in its duet form) will appear on Bobby V’s new album.

CAST OF ‘THE BEST MAN’ REUNITE AFTER 12 YEARS

best_man

Most of you remember the 1999 film The Best Man. It was one of a handful of ‘black romantic comedies’ that came hot on the heels of the ‘black hood’ films that came out in the 90s, along with the likes of Love Jones, Boomerang, Love and Basketball and The Wood. It featured a who’s who cast of Hollywood’s then rising black stars with Taye Diggs, Nia Long, Morris Chestnut, Sanaa Lathan Harold Perrineau, Regina Hall and a few others all starring.

Spotted over at www.bossip.com this week… the complete original cast, along with director Malcolm D Lee (cousin of Spike), recently got together to celebrate the 12 year anniversary of the movie’s release.

This was the first time the cast met up since the film came out. (See below for pictures and our write-up of the classic film).

BRAIDS

brandybraids2011I was pleasantly surprised to see singer/actress Brandy rocking her old school signature braids this week. Considering it comes hot on the heels of both Solange Knowles and Kim Kardashain sporting the style, it makes me wonder if the long plaited look is making a comeback in the showbiz world.

BLOSSOM

400_mbialik_090120_blossomBack in the day, before satellite TV was a staple in most households, after school on Channel 4, between 6pm-7pm to be precise, was where it was at for most kids. This was the time when a lot of the US import TV shows aimed at teens were broadcast. Blossom was one such show and proved extremely popular both here and the US (NBC) in the five years that it ran (1990-1995). Continue reading “BLOSSOM” »

MENACE II SOCIETY

menace-ii-society-1993-02-gMenace II Society (1993) was one of the better US ‘hood films’ that came out during the 90s explosion of the genre. Written and directed by the Hughes Brothers (twins Allen and Albert), the film tells the story of Caine (Tyrin Turner), a young black teen growing up in Watts, South Central Los Angeles. Having just graduated from high school, the movie explores what his next steps in life are. Not the most straight-laced of young men, he deals drugs to support the baby mother of an incarcerated friend, and isn’t afraid of dishing out a beat down in certain situations. Then there is his involvement in the murder of a Korean shopkeeper and his wife, and it is a combination of these things which ultimately lead to his downfall. Continue reading “MENACE II SOCIETY” »

BACK TO THE FUTURE CELEBRATES 25TH ANNIVERSARY!

back_to_the_future2[1]One of the best films to ever come out in the history of  movies – in my humble opinion - celebrated its 25th anniversary, this October 2010! Back To The Future (1985), the sci-fi action adventure film, directed by Robert Zemeckis, celebrated the landmark occasion by re-releasing the classic film back into cinemas – and issuing a digitally-revised trilogy package! Excited, much? Er.. Yeah!

Marty McFly and Doc Brown’s time-traveling adventures never get old for me, and I am not afraid to admit I am a total stan for the whole BTTF trilogy. And those who scoff at the whole notion of flying cars and Nikes that lace up by themselves (a la BTTF 2), there is still 5 years left to see if that actually happens by the way!

The film hit US cinemas in October 2010 courtesy of AMC Theatres, which will exclusively present the digitally-remastered film in more than 150 movie houses across 40 different markets, on Saturday, October 23rd at 12.30pm, and again on Monday, October 25th at 7pm. And the below revamped trailer is being used as a promotional tool. Early feedback from those who have already seen the re-mastered version say it’s so sharp and clean you can see the make-up on the actor’s faces, and even a little scar on MJF’s cheek, that no one really knew he had!

And to keep the momentum going a special 25th anniversary Back to the Future trilogy box set is wa sreleased on Blu-Ray and DVD on 25th October, 2010 (UK), featuring new interviews and commentary, including the origins of the idea for the movie as told by co-creator/writer/producer of the movie Bob Gale (below).

On another note, Empire Magazine has an amazing article, complete with pictures and exclusive interviews with the movie’s director and writer Robert Zemeckis, writer/producer Bob Gale and executive producer Steven Spielberg, which provides a lot of insight into the history and making of all three films. http://www.empireonline.com/interviews/interview.asp?IID=1084

AND…

There is an upcoming week-long  25th Anniversary celebration titled ‘We’re Going Back’ Hollywood, where fans can visit original filming location, get up close with several DeLorean Time Machine replicas, tour the museum of screen-used props, continuity Polaroids, and behind-the-scenes photographs and ride a hoverboard with Griff’s 2015 gang and their stunt team, and a whole lot more. The week culminates with an ‘Enchantment Under the Sea’ gala evening at the same filming location. There will also be a special props and costume auction, for which Back to the Future creator Bob Gale has donated items from his personal collection, so there is bound to be some real goodies in the mix. This whole event takes place between 5th-12th November, 2010, with all proceeds going to The Michael J. Fox Foundation’s ‘Team Fox’ to aid in Parkinson’s research.

Visit: www.weregoingback.com to find out more details about the event, including costs. Man, I wish I could go, seems like every true BTTF fan’s dream trip!

FINALLY… Check out all the reasons why I love BTTF and Michael J Fox here!
